Xavier Navarro received the MD degree in 1978 and the PhD degree in 1985 from the Unversitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB). He completed his speciality training in Neurology at the University of Barcelona, and in Neurophysiology at the University of Minnesota. He was Assistant Porfessor of the Department of Neurology of the University of Minnesota (1986-1988). He returned in 1988 to the UAB as Associate Professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Physiology, where he is currently full Professor of Physiology since 1999. He has been a founder of the Institute of Neurosciences of the UAB, and the director of the Department (2010-2016).  He also serves as scientific advisor of the Institut Guttmann of Neurorehabilitation.
Since 1989 he is coordinating the research Group of Neuroplasticity and Regeneration. His research interests are focused on axonal regeneration, functional restitution after nerve injuries, cell and molecular therapies for spinal cord injuries, neuroprostheses, peripheral neuropathies, neuropathic pain and motoneuron diseases. He has published more than 350 papers in refereed journals and books in these areas of the neurosciences, with an H-index of 55, and directed 26 PhD theses. He has been member of the editorial boards of: Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience, Journal of the Peripheral Nervous System, Muscle and Nerve, Frontiers in Neuroengineering, Neural Plasticity. He has received awards “Ciutat de Barcelona” in 1995, “Josep Trueta” in 2000, ASPAYM in 2009 for his scientific research activities.

The Group of Neuroplasticity and Regeneration of the UAB is a multidisciplinary research group working on repair, regeneration and functional recovery after peripheral nerve and spinal cord lesions and in neurodegenerative diseases.





- Cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in degeneration of motoneurons in experimental models. Neuroprotective strategies based on gene and pharmacological therapy.

- Cell therapy by transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells and olfactory glia for the repair of spinal cord injuries and motoneuron degenerative diseases.

- Etiopathogenic role of lipid mediators and modulators of the neuroinflammatory response in neurodegeneration induced by central nervous system lesions.

- Activity-dependent therapies for enhancing axonal regeneration and functional recovery after peripheral nerve lesions.

- Physiopathological mechanisms in neuropathic pain induced by nerve and spinal cord lesions.

- Etiopathogenic mechanisms and potential neuroprotective treatments in peripheral neuropathies induced by diabetes and by antitumoral agents.

- Design and evaluation of neural interfaces for the development of neuroprostheses applied to neurorehabilitation.

- Neuromodulation for functional recovery in spinal cord injuries and degenerative processes.
